Ground Beetle - Carabus granulatus

Ground Beetle - Carabus granulatus
Zipple Bay State Park, Lake of the Woods County, Minnesota, USA
July 19, 2014
It's been six years since I photographed this one, so I don't remember the size, but this is an uncropped image on my APS-C sized sensor, taken at something near lifesize. Also, the RAW image shows a much darker image, not quite black, which I think is probably more accurate. I lightened the image to show the details: otherwise the image would be little more than a silhouette.

Thanks
Thank you for the ID. I have been looking at the various Carabus species, and I think that this one is either granulatus or maeander, but I don't see any good way to distinguish between the two. Do you have any suggestions on how to tell?

Tough call
They're very similar, but I think I lean towards C. granulatus because the pronotum on yours seems a little shorter and wider, but it's at an angle in your photo and I'm not an expert on the group.

Thanks
Thank you. So the deciding factor is the shape of the pronotum. I haven't been able to find any information on how to tell them apart. Unfortunately I have no other photos that might show that better.

Maybe
I couldn't find anything concrete either, I was just comparing lots of photos and that was something that stood out to me.
