male chironomid - Chironomus - Male
Rockville, Montgomery County, Maryland, USA
May 8, 2020
Size: wing 3.7mm
This one appears to key out to an 11 flagellomere Chironomous in the MND chironomid key. There appear to be 2 medially pointing hairs at the base of left appendage 1 in the dry prep of the terminalia but they're really hard to see in these photos (one hair barely visible on the right appendage 1). Imaging those hairs properly would require more magnification/resolution than I can get with this setup.

I tried Townes' "Tendipedini" key (1) where this appears to key out to C. decorus which I assume translates to the guide's decorus group. It does have the "darkened wing membrane around veins R-M, Cu2 and 2A" mentioned on the species group page. I have images of the apex of the fore and hind tibia and the hind claws if they are of any use.

As usual, I could be way off. Thanks for the help.
