Pennsylvania Caterpillar for ID - Scolecocampa liburna

Pennsylvania Caterpillar for ID - Scolecocampa liburna
Northkill Road north of Shartlesville, Berks County, Pennsylvania, USA
May 10, 2020
Size: 38 mm
Found under peeled bark from a long dead large upright deciduous tree. When it dropped I thought it must be a beetle grub but was surprised to find an apparent lepidoptera close to perhaps a Papaipema borer sp. If so I'm not sure why it would be found there and not in or near a herbaceous plant. Submitted for ID help, and advice on how to feed it to maturity.
