Wouldn't have found this on my own. The boldness of the pattern fits lepida far better than Contacyphon.

what caught my eye...
is the shape of the pronotum isn't right for a scirtid (see how it angles down towards the base?)

if you
do an advanced search with Contacyphon and Iowa, you can see the beetle correctly proportioned
