It was very actively crawling all over a 5 cm rotten branch and inserting its ovipositor into crevices in the bark. Location was a mixed hardwood (oak, hickory, maple, ash) ravine.

Thanks John. After reviewing the images of Ctenophora the bold stripe colors and red thorax most resemble Ctenophora apicata. On Bugguide, this appears to be the western most specimen in the U.S.
