Emerging from a small log buried in soil in the southern San Bernardino Mountains, at about 5400 feet of elevation

Hundreds of these emerge from a small hole in the log, at the edge of the soil (a few cm below the insect in the photo). Most of them took flight quickly, and their wings caught the late-afternoon sun.
