This was aggressively knocking other bees in flight and on flowers. Seen on the native shrub Pacific Ninebark (Physocarpus capitatus).

Volucella bombylans - complex.
DNA studies suggest Volucella bombylans is restricted to the Palearctic but we are at present placing the Nearctic species in that complex.
This is interesting in that the thorax is black pilose, the face looks yellow (this may be pollinosity or hairs?)
I have sent it to Dr. Martin Hauser, Professor Jeff Skevington and Dr. Andrew Young.

I think the chitin of the face is yellow. This is one of the characters to distinguish several species in this complex, if they have a yellow or a black face...
