Where is the orange pattern on the abdomen? Moreover isn't the head shaped like typical Platycheirus (smaller eyes in Melanostoma)? Thanks for explaining.

Melanic (without orange markings) Melanostoma mellinum are frequent.
Unmodified male front legs and no tufts of hairs on posterior of front femur.
Platycheirus without modified legs have silvery spots or dusting on the abdomen and the thorax not a brassy colouration but often with bluish reflections and the face somewhat produced. Melanostoma mellinum probably comprises more than one species which may be resolved by DNA studies but at present they are all being placed under that name.
