Is it a beetle? - Meloe americanus

Is it a beetle? - Meloe americanus
Seymour, Muscatatuck NWR County, Indiana, USA
May 10, 2008
Size: 1 and a half inches or so
This little guy was walking along in the leaf litter beside a path. I heard him/her before I saw him/her. At first I thought it was an ant of some sort, then I noticed the wings looked more like a beetle. Now I'm just confused.

Yes.
This is one of the "oil beetles" in the genus Meloe, family Meloidae (blister beetles). Looks to be a female, as males usually have modified antennae ("kinks" or "knots" in the middle segments).
