Hodges #7674 - Small Tolype - Tolype notialis
Tallahassee, Leon County, Florida, USA
May 22, 2020
Size: Length ≈10mm
The first decent photo I could get of one of the caterpillars, a little more than a week old I assume. I fed the caterpillars young needles on twigs of what I think was Loblolly Pine (Pinus taeda) and later also older needles on twigs collected under a Short Leaf Pine (Pinus echinata) after a storm.

Raising T. notialis
At night the caterpillars preferred to rest upside down (c.f. Wagner (1) for Tolype velleda) on the lower end of the twig that I had removed the needles from to be able to emerge it in the water of a small bottle. Doing so one of my caterpillars once stuck its head into the small space available in the bottle's neck next to the twig and was unable to back up the next evening. Lesson: be sure that there is not such a space.
