Hypomecis Species - Hypomecis

Hypomecis Species - Hypomecis
Karnack, Harrison County, Texas, USA
May 10, 2020
Size: 26mm
Found as a final instar on Nuttall's Oak (Quercus texana). Interestingly the 'defensive glands' are largest when the larva is resting. When agitated they are everted. As the resulting adult appears to be either Hypomecis gnopharia or Hypomecis umbrosaria the description of the larvae in Wagner (1) would seem to be in error. The original descriptions by Rogert L. Heitzman remains definitive.
