the pattern on the pronotum of this rove struck me as similar to a 4-leaf clover. suggestions welcome :)

Carpelimus
The real difficulty with the 80 or so Carpelimus species from the Nearctics is that the species described 100-150 years ago are not the same ones that you find in collections today. Most of the modern materials are from light traps, while the old ones were collected in an actual habitat (frequently gone by today). But I do not see collectors these days go into the mud and hand-collect Carpelimus... And only a smaller fraction of Carpelimus fly to light.
