ID of Colorado insect please - Catocala
Greenwood Village, Arapahoe County, Colorado, USA

Size: 2-3 inches
I found this under a patio cushion in my backyard. I didn't touch it so I don't know if it was solid or just a shell of something. I'm curious what it is/was. Thanks!

Pupating Catocala Caterpillar
Looks to be the larva of a Catocala species. Something like Catocala neogama, but Colorado is west of my knowledge. What trees are nearby?

If you want to use your patio furniture without worrying about squishing it grab the caterpillar and put it in a container with some leaf litter so it can finish pupating. In about a month you will get a lovely moth.

Pupating Caterpillar
There are several old cottonwood trees above where I found the caterpillar. He disappeared shortly after I discovered him. Perhaps he was eaten by a bird? Lots of those around.

Thank you very much for the information. The ID looks right to me.
