Sphodros niger - male

Sphodros niger - Male
Green Lane, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, USA
June 9, 2020
This spider was wandering in our yard. We live in a wooded area. My Dad often told me they wander in early June after a rainy spell to find a female - I haven't been able to find one for 25 years and my cat was pointing him out like a spaniel! 8:00 AM, 78 deg. F, sunny, after a few days of rain and damp. I've tried to show palp and eye images (not much success as it was running around the bowl), and to show the spinnerettes and general body details. I believe this to be a good ID, but I'm a rank amateur so am not counting on that. Not a professional photographer, either.

Purse-webs
Excellent photos. Have you looked for any purse-webs? I'm adding Green Lane to my 'visit a park' list to look for purse-webs and shed skins, not far for me in ChesCo (mapthespider.com).

Purse Web Spider
Hi, Steve,

I haven't looked for them for years but I know they are around - just not many (or at least not obvious). My brother-in-law is Ken Frank. He lives in Phillie and you may know him.

Email me, if you wish. You may come here to look but there are some limitations I'd need to explain to you.

How lovely to know someone is having a ball with these spiders:>)
