Lichen-colored caterpillar - Catocala ilia

Lichen-colored caterpillar - Catocala ilia
University of New Hampshire, Durham, New Hampshire, USA
May 16, 2008
Size: 1.5-2 inches
This poor giant was on the sidewalk & had clearly been stepped on by a careless person (though I my self nearly mistook it for a twig had it not been it's odd profile.) The back end & one profoot are smooshed (awwww... :C ) but it was other wise ok (though I doubt it'll survive the night with those wounds... while a wounded profoot is likely survivable the back side is one that will likely kill it...)

I had seen similar caterpillars on the guide's bug ID section previously & though I should take it with me. After letting it rest far about an hour in my room & having taken several photos, I released it in the leaf litter near my dorm (where it should be safe from human feet). I know I couldn't have done anything & it clearly was in some 'pain' (it wouldn't keep still after I picked it up).

But that aside, what kind of caterpillar was it?
