Ladybird Beetle?
Oakland, Alameda County, California, USA
May 17, 2008
Size: 3/8"
Unidentified beetle (?) on Italian thistle, on chip pile at 1200ft. elev. Second picture is a bit blurry, but shows segmentation. On nearby plants (all Italian thistle) were many 7-spotted ladybird beetles.

Ladybird Beetle? Ladybird Beetle?

Moved
Moved from Ladybird Beetles.

It's The Pupa
Just like a caterpillar's chrysalis, the adult lady beetle will emerge from this.

It's the Pupa
So I have to wait for the adult to find out what it is?

Watchful waiting, doctors call it.
That may be your best bet, short of plowing through loads of images here and maybe still coming up dry. Or maybe you'll be lucky with this request. (It doesn't appear to be the common "spikey footed" Multicolored Asian Lady Beetle (Harmonia axyridis) which is often IDed.)
