I've never seen eyes like this on Stegobium. That said, usually, their heads are curled under. Also, it looks like the pronotum flares outwark. On Stegobium, it's more cylindrical.

all good points... you may well be right
looks too stocky for a Petalium, tho -- at least as compared to those 5-6 spp. i see around here

collect, collect, collect!

I found another similar one - I didn't have anything to capture it with when I took the photo.

Better photos this time - and this time I collected it as well.

Yeah, I think that's an illusion caused by the camera angle. This shot was probably a sort of afterthought. I think I was actually shooting moths that night. I'm pretty sure the camera was not orthogonal to the beetle. Normally I'd have multiple shots and try to have at least one that is orthogonal, but not this time. This is just a crop. I'll check the whole frame and see if it offers more clues, but probably not.

I've started collecting moths but haven't collected beetles yet.

I added a picture of the whole frame. It looks like it was close to the bottom of the sliding glass door, so I was shooting down at an angle. That also means the length is longer than what is indicated in the shot with the scale.

The other beetle is this one.

I just checked. Unfortunately
I just checked. Unfortunately, this is the only photo I have.
