Unknown Insect - Halysidota

Unknown Insect - Halysidota
Derry, NH, Rockingham County, New Hampshire, USA
June 11, 2020
Size: Approximately 3"
I believe this to be some kind of moth. It was attracted to the porch by the lights in the late evening hours.

Sycamore tussocks have been seen in
Peterborough and Manchester, so if you are near there, it is possible that you have seen some sycamores. The adults are only separable at this time by dissection. The Banded Tussock is much more common there of course by a factor of a hundred or more, but you could see a Sycamore tussock. Look for caterpillars. They are usually easily identified.

Halysidota
We don't know if you have Sycamore anywhere nearby. If not, this is tessellaris

Halysidota
How close would the Sycamore have to be? I have 1 sycamore +/- .6 miles from my house in Londonderry NH (southern NH - near Mass. border). Halysidota are frequent and some years abundant. For years I've IDed them as tessellaris.

Thanks
Hi Folks,

There is no Sycamore nearby that I am aware of, mostly oak, elm, birch, maple and pine. Thanks again for the help.

All the best,
TJ
