Common Aerial Yellowjacket - Dolichovespula arenaria - female

Common Aerial Yellowjacket - Dolichovespula arenaria - Female
Lacey (near Olympia), Thurston County, Washington, USA
August 4, 2007
After Sean caught me trying to file a Common Aerial Yellowjacket as a Western Yellowjacket today, I decided to look back through my files and see if I'd made that same mistake in the past. I found these 2 pics which I also thought were Western, but again the yellow doesn't go all the way around the eyes. Is this another example of a Common Aerial??

This is a Common Aerial (Dolichovespula arenaria)
Another difference versus V. pensylvanica is the complete black basal stripe on the (distinctly shorter) urotergite 1.
I have not yet seen any Western queen (this one Aerial is a young queen ready to overwinter) with only six "free" black spots (virtually all of them have eight).
