Camel cricket - Ammobaenetes - female

Camel cricket - Ammobaenetes - Female
Clark County, Nevada, USA
May 14, 2008
I found plenty of these when I was out blacklighting for scorpions this night. Found in an area of well-vegetated sand dunes. Most of the ones I saw seemed to be female.

Sand-treader.
This is a "sand-treader," perhaps Macrobaetes valgum, but I can't be positive. Might even be something undescribed. Only recently have dune ecosystems been getting the attention they deserve. You should e-mail your images to Dr. Dave Lightfoot at the University of New Mexico, as he is a leading authority on orthopterans, albeit a very busy guy (so be patient if you should choose to contact him).

Re: Sand-treader
I would be happy to e-mail him my images. I also collected a number of these (and can collect additional specimens) if you/he are interested in seeing actual specimens. Feel free to send me a private e-mail with his e-mail address.
