dark red and black ant - Formica pallidefulva

dark red and black ant - Formica pallidefulva
Lake Meyer Park, Winneshiek County, Iowa, USA
June 24, 2019
Size: ~5 mm
I'm slowly trying to learn what ants are in my area. This one doesn't look quite like the New York carpenter ant that is also black and red but maybe they can vary in color.

Formica pallidefulva
Thanks so much for identifying this red and black ant as Formica pallidefulva, James! I read that they are a field ant but do not build a big noticeable mound above the nest. Very interesting.
