Mystery insect in large pod - Hyalophora euryalus

Mystery insect in large pod - Hyalophora euryalus
Victoria, Metchosin, British Columbia, Canada
June 19, 2020
Size: approx. 1 inch long
Hi! I'm sorry if this is out of the guidelines, but I don't know who else to turn to for help with identifying this super mysterious bug inside a large pod that was found on the ground, looked to have been there for a while. The pod is about the size of a lime. It has silvery, hairy fibres covering the outside. Seems kind of like a plant pod but unlike anything I've seen around here. I opened it up with a pair of scissors to investigate and was alarmed to find this large, black, beetle-esque(???) insect apparently mummified inside. I'll attach several pictures since it crumbled apart a bit and I want to provide as many clues as I can. I super appreciate any ideas, would love to learn about what is going on here! For now, I've been calling it an "alien pod", so anything more accurate than that would be amazing :) Thank you!

Yours could be a different species, though. Hold on to see what others have to say.
