Nest 01 - Dolichovespula maculata

Nest 01 - Dolichovespula maculata
Near Curlew Lake, ~10 miles Northeast of Republic, Ferry County, Washington, USA
May 15, 2008
Size: ~6 inches long??
A distinct wasp nest hanging under the eves on the West side of my Cottage. It doesn't seem to be a typical Vespidae nest with the long entrance tunnel.

This entrance tunnel...
is an usual feature of D. maculata (Bald-faced Hornet) queen-nest, i.e. built by the lone foundress queen before the first workers emerge.
Some foundresses of the same species don't built any one, while others make a longer one. But its mere presence here is enough to rule out D. arenaria, even though there is no reliable scale to assess the diameter.

D. arenaria?
the entance of the tube looks a little small for D. maculata so i would guess that it is a D. arenaria nest.
