mighty mite - Hydrachna

mighty mite - Hydrachna
Hampshire Athletic Club, Hampshire County, Massachusetts, USA
June 21, 2020
One of the largest and roundest mites I've ever seen. The legs looked too short to move such a hilariously balloon-ish body around, but they did. It was in some pond water I had scooped up to search for aquatic invertebrates for the 2020 MIIDGE project.

Moved from Hydrachnidia - Water Mites. Thank you Heather!

Hydrachna
A member of the genus Hydrachna (Hydrachnoidea: Hydrachnidae), and yes, some of the are very big and almost completely spherical! The nymphs and adults feed on eggs of aquatic heteropterans, and the larvae parasitize aquatic heteropterans (see, e.g., https://bugguide.net/node/view/889668/bgimage).

Cheers,
Heather
