Pytho niger

Pytho niger
Norridgewock, Somereset County, Maine, USA
June 5, 2020
Size: 11 mm
Collected on the trunk of dead but still standing Eastern White Pine (Pinus strobus) tree in a sandy forest along Old School House Road near Martin Stream. I believe the tree had only recently died as it still had tight bark. I had not encountered this species before and I am curious as to what different niche it occupies compared to the very similar Pytho americanus. This beetle was found during the day, but in dense shade on a small (about 1 foot diameter) understory tree that was surrounded but larger and more vigorous Eastern White Pines. P. americanus seems to be much more common and is usually (in my experience) found in bright sunshine actively running along the trunks of large and newly fallen Eastern White Pines.
