Atlanticus glaber - male

Atlanticus glaber - Male
Croom Wildlife Management Area, Hernando County, Florida, USA
June 29, 2020
Size: ~25 mm
Call can be heard here: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/51446052

It was remarkable that this species appeared to respond back after playing its call on my phone accidentally at night. I should have known since they occur in sandhill habitats. Males were usually found calling near the top of short bushes of turkey or sand live oak. If they were disturbed, they'd escape and call from elsewhere, even as high as pine tree branches. If light is directly shined at them, they will react and try to slowly tread and jump away. Atlanticus gibbosus (which was present in the area alongside this species) also responds back to call recordings, and presumably other members of the genus (maybe even shieldbacks in general) as well. These were much smaller than gibbosus. This will be cross-posted to BugGuide.
