Eastern Parson Spider - Herpyllus ecclesiasticus - male

Eastern Parson Spider - Herpyllus ecclesiasticus - Male
Marlton, Burlington County, New Jersey, USA
May 7, 2008
Size: Maybe around 6 mm?
Found this in a tub in the laundry room. I don't know know long it had been in there, but it didn't seem capable of climbing the plastic sides to get out. It had some web-like material in one corner. When found it was in this closed posture. Sleeping or defensive? I believe that the ID is correct based on other images already in the guide, and I assume male based on the palps.

I don't know whether spiders
I don't know whether spiders sleep -- perhaps a "resting" position. If it was defensive I'd expect to see legs I raised. Could also possibly be a way to slow dehydration... ?
