Wondering why these mites were clustered on daisies like this.

possibly Balaustium
Nice photo! The mites are possibly from the genus Balaustium (Erythraeidae rather than Trombidiidae), which are unusual among parasitengones in that some species feed on pollen (see also https://bugguide.net/node/view/390417 and https://bugguide.net/node/view/91443). Ray Fisher would be able to tell you for sure.
