Thanks Ken! I found an image of eyed click beetle on the Texas A&M agri extention site that matches what we have perfectly! I think you are right on!

Not an ID
but looks like one of the "eyed click beetles" - Alaus sp.? Take a look there while you wait for an expert to comment...
