fossorial ground beetle - Clivina fossor

fossorial ground beetle - Clivina fossor
Craigleith Provincial Park, Grey, Ontario, Canada
May 19, 2005
This shot shows the oddly-shaped protibia of this specimen, which is apparently used for digging. See this Maine site for close-up shots of the protibiae from a couple of species; the shape of this specimen closely resembles those two (C. fossor and C. impressefrons, both of which occur in Ontario).
