Bar-winged Skimmer - Libellula axilena

Bar-winged Skimmer - Libellula axilena
Hilton Head, Beaufort County, South Carolina, USA
May 24, 2008
taken in grassy area along Port Royal Sound....trying to guess...is this a female great blue skimmer??

Not sure...
It looks like either a female Bar-winged (Libellula axilena), Slaty (L. incesta) or Great Blue Skimmer (L. vibrans), all of which look very similar. I think a Great Blue Skimmer would have a whiter face than this individual, whereas a Slaty would have a dark face. This appears to have a dark face with a white border, which is consistent with a Bar-winged Skimmer. So, I would tentatively guess Bar-winged.
