Malacosoma californica? Variation in wing pattern - Malacosoma - female

Malacosoma californica? Variation in wing pattern - Malacosoma - Female
Pagosa Springs, Archuletta County, Colorado, USA
June 24, 2020
I was really puzzled by the broken banding on the wing and came across a couple of mystery Malacosoma posted here. Took a look at the plates in Stehr, F.W. & E.F. Cook 1968. A revision of the genus Malacosoma Hubner in North America (Lepidoptera: Lasiocampidae): systematics, biology, immatures, and parasites. Bulletin of the United States National Museum, (276): 1-321. Their specimens do show a lot of pattern variations including these broken stripes.

Male
Long pectines = ♂
Somehow, the antennae have been clipped short on both sides.
