Exoskeleton or insect attacked by mold or fungi?

Exoskeleton or insect attacked by mold or fungi?
San Francisco , San Francisco County, California, USA
July 8, 2020
Size: Approximately 1.5 - 2 mm
Is this a shed exoskeleton, or bug covered in some kind of mold or fungi? I've found a few of these things in both my bathroom and in the living room of my water damaged, slum lord managed apartment. None of the windows fit well in the frames and there's numerous gaps around plumbing, large enough to allow mice or rats. I wonder if a mouse or rat uses my apt as a passageway to other places, and perhaps dropped a few creatures off along the way. My indoors only cat doesn't have fleas, flea dirt, larva or eggs. I regularly check, and he's on Revolution plus. That's why it's so puzzling to find what I feel looks like a flea or tick shaped exoskeleton. Btw- this is only the top of the iceberg. I regularly find other strange insects and micro sized life forms in this space, although I keep it clean and store food in pest proof containers. Only thing is my cat occasionally leaves treat crumbs that I don't always see at night. I do feed him on an elevated surface that cannot be scaled by mice, though. I do suspect mice in the apt though I hear tapping on the walls and find strange debris on floor sometimes. Also the gaps around plumbing, large enough for rodents, appear to have gray hair fuzz balls next to the wall.
This is not the only weird exoskeleton I've found in here. This apt is seriously teeming with mysterious lifeforms. I'll upload more soon. The landlords pest control guy of 30 years is their old croney. Not only that, I once asked if something was a springtail and he says they're huge, over an inch long, and don't jump. That's so inaccurate. They're not called snow fleas for nothing. They're tiny! So now I trust him even less than I did to start with and believe he's either truly uninformed or an outright liar. So I bought a digital microscope on Amazon and now doing my own investigation. There are too many signs of something infesting this place, and my cat is chasing things and meowing at walls lately, even though he's usually a lazy 17 yr old cat who sleeps most of the time.
Clues anyone?
