Velvet ant - Dasymutilla - female

Velvet ant - Dasymutilla - Female
New Londo County, Connecticut, USA
July 8, 2020
Size: Approximately 1/2 inch
Observed in late afternoon. She was in an area with multiple ground nesting bees. Mostly Halictini, but also Gorytina. I noticed her right away due to her size, bright red color, large abdomen, and quick escape once she spotted me. I was unsuccessful in my attempt to capture her. She was actually one of five Velvet Ants spotted today in my garden.
I don’t know how many generations or eggs per generation are laid by various species, but I’m finding many this year. Last year I only found three. I think this year it’s at 16. Mostly frigida.
