Black Bug - Galgupha

Black Bug - Galgupha
Springfield, Calhoun County, Michigan, USA
May 22, 2008
Found on the ground in my garden. I did not get a measurement but it was small, maybe 5mm. I looked at beetles for 284 pages and then looked at how many pages there were, WOW. Also started going through true bugs but started getting cross-eyed. Is this a bug or beetle? Do you know what family? Male or female? Any info is appreciated since I like learning about them. Thank you.
