A queen German Yellowjacket, Vespula germanica, feeding on nectar from a flowering shrub. I'm surprised there aren't more photos of this now quite common invasive species.

Difficult to say
Difficult to say from the image. Not much of the plant visible. Looks like it might be Cotoneaster which is certainly much planted as an ornamental here around Chicago, and I suspect up near Madison. Too many images of horticulturals online to look through, but this one might give you a comparison.

Thanks. A Cotoneaster was as near as I could identify it, but the diagram in the book wasn't quite a match. If not that it's definitely a similar species though. Hymenopteran insects just LOVE its flowers!
