German yellowjacket queen feeding on nectar - Vespula germanica - female

German yellowjacket queen feeding on nectar - Vespula germanica - Female
Stoughton, Dane County, Wisconsin, USA
May 20, 2005
By the way, anybody know what kind of shrub this yellowjacket is feeding on? I can't find a match in my guidebook. Its flowers are a magnet for hymenopteran insects. In addition to V. germanica, I have seen queens of V. maculifrons, Dolichovespula arenaria, and D. maculata feeding on its flowers, not to mention Polistine wasps, solitary vespid (potter) wasps, and all sorts of bees.
