Monarch in hay field - Danaus plexippus

Monarch in hay field - Danaus plexippus
Gallia County, Ohio, USA
July 12, 2020
Earliest in year listed for Ohio. Visiting family in southern county of Ohio along the Ohio river. Their hay field had a lot of clover in bloom and we saw 3 monarchs nectaring. They were by far the most adverse to getting their picture taken. I think I convinced them to leave a few of the milkweed along the margins of the field next time they cut the field for hay.

I saw some here (Montgomery County) last Monday (7/6), but was collecting beetles and flies. They were too far away to get a clean image with my phone.

Even if they don't use the milkweed for breeding, milkweed flowers are a great food source for many pollinators, so every little bit helps!
