Beetle - Gonocephalum sericeum

Beetle - Gonocephalum sericeum
Shipley Nature Center, Huntington Beach, Orange County, California, USA
May 26, 2008
Size: ~0.5cm
Found three of these on the underside of a piece of dead bark on the path, along with an earwig and some smaller, faster beetles. These did not initially move when I picked up the bark, giving me ample time to photograph them.

Gonocephalum sp.
This is a new US record for this old world genus. Last week I found 8 specimens at Newport Beach, CA that look the same, but all are females, making speciefic ID difficult (over 400 spp. in Gonocephalum). Interested if anyone has more CA specimens that could be examined.

thanks, Warren
i'll ask around
