for placing this to family, Ken. The ID certainly looks right, but this individual is way out of range for size, according to the
Info
page (20-50mm). I double-checked and am confident my measurement is accurate +/-10 percent.

The range on the Info Page...
...may apply to most Scoliids, but not to all.
Scolia nobilitata
, for example, is only 10-15 mm.

Indeed!
And we have images of
S. nobilitata
from 31 states and provinces. After a quick search, I found that
Colpa (Trielis) octomaculata
, a possible ID for my image with data points from 11 states, is also in the 10-15mm range. Another of that size in the guide is
Dielis (Camposomeris) trifasciata
which occurs in Florida. I'll put a note in the "Guide Page Improvements" forum suggesting a size range for
Scoliidae
of 10-50mm to include species contributors encounter fairly frequently.
