Very Large Wasp - Vespa crabro

Very Large Wasp - Vespa crabro
Louisa County, Virginia, USA
May 26, 2008
As this flew by, I first thought it was a clearwing moth. The size was similar to a snowberry clearwing moth (Hemaris diffinis).

European hornet.
This is a specimen of the European hornet, Vespa crabro, our only true hornet (bald-faced "hornet" is a large yellowjacket), and originally from overseas as the name indicates.

Vespa
Thanks, Eric. I think it was the same day I took that photo when my spouse told me he'd just read that the Vespa motorscooter was named for a wasp.
