Size: 1.5 - 2 inches

This is looking straight down on the back
of the cat with the head at the lower right. If you have a lateral image you can add, we should be able to say which of those two species it is.

Schizura
Either Schizura ipomaeae or Schizura unicornis. Most likely the former but the photo is not quite detailed enough to be definitive.

 
Unknown caterpillar
Thanks for your input. I was told that this looked like the insect was not right side up, but it was crawling away from me when the pic was snapped, so I am a bit puzzled by that observation.
