Differences between Hemaris diffinis and H. aethra? - Hemaris diffinis
Thornton, Adams County, Colorado, USA
July 14, 2020
Presumed this to be Hemaris diffinis as they’re common to the region. Someone has suggested that it’s H.aethra but there are no data points for that species in Colorado. Would appreciate if anyone more knowledgeable than I could make a positive ID. Located on sunflower leaf near my honeysuckle.

H. diffinis based upon location and markings
H. thetis is identical but located west of continental divide https://bugguide.net/node/view/310563

H.aethra is an eastern Canada species.

Hemaris diffinis it is then!
Thank you Cliff! I appreciate the info on H. thetis... didn’t even know they’d been elevated. So many bugs, so little time.
