European Hornet (Vespa crabro) - queen
More than yellowjackets, this species is often attracted to lights by night, due to an extensive nocturnal activity. Ozark Mountains is one of the few regions West of Mississipi River where V. crabro occurs.
Strangely drab color suggests a rather poor health for this individual.

European Hornet (Vespa crabro) - queen
Mr. Vernier - Will you tell me, please, how to ID a queen? Is it simply the larger size, or are there other distinguishing characteristics? Thank you! Diane

Thanks, Richard
Drab color may be the result of brightening slightly too dark flash shots. I'm glad these large hornets aren't supposed to be aggressive. Marvin
