It looks to be some type of mantid, but the angle of the photo makes it hard to tell which. It seems to most closely resemble the Stagmomantis in your area, but the detail isn't clear enough for me to be sure. Maybe someone from the area will recognise it.

I think that's definitely the right direction - those eyes were just too big for a walking stick
