Unknown Bee - Protoxaea gloriosa - male

Unknown Bee - Protoxaea gloriosa - Male
Tome, Valencia County, New Mexico, USA
July 20, 2020
Size: 21.5 mm
I found a whole colony of these in our Oak tree. They were all huddled around the newly forming acorns and were all facing towards the stem. They have black wings, red-brownish legs and green eyes and are about 21.5mm in length. The "fur" striping on the abdomen is very faint. At first I thought that this may be a bee-mimic, but, it has fore and hind wings on either side of the thorax. They are very docile and didn't anger when I moved the tree branch to get a closer look. At first I thought that they could be honeybees, but, the size is far too large. The only bee in the New Mexico region that fits this bees description is Xylocopa varipuncta, but I am not confident in that specification.
