The adult I reared from SA1818 seems like a perfect match for
C. glutinella
, and I think this must be the same thing. There is a record from Virginia from just a few years after the species was described, and by the person who described it (Ely, 1918 vs. 1915), so it makes sense for it to be in NC too.

Nice!
Caloptilia glutinella
is the only known North American alder feeder that remotely resembles this one, but I'm not entirely convinced this is that species. This looks similar to the one you've found on
Betula nigra
, except that one has a yellow head and thorax and this one doesn't seem to.

Cool! I have one other cocoon from Alnus, but the adult has not yet emerged. I have only one cocoon from Betula (after **lots** of collections including several larvae), and it is unclear if an adult will emerge from it.
