Geometrid Moth, Ocean City Area - Epimecis hortaria - male

Geometrid Moth, Ocean City Area - Epimecis hortaria - Male
Berlin, Worcester County, Maryland, USA
May 23, 2008
Size: ca. 2 in. wingspread
This medium-sized (ca. 2 in.) moth rested for a while on my front door screen in Ocean Pines, MD (near Ocean City) on May 23, long enough to photograph. I and others were bemused by the tiny image of a horned "vampire" face with fangs on its upper abdomen. so we nicknamed it the "Dracula moth." It fits the "geometrid moth" profile in your page but I was not able to find a close fit among the photos displayed.

Tulip-tree beauty
Epimecis hortaria

Ah, that makes sense!
My house is surrounded by tulip poplars, which have just finished leafing out. It's the ideal time to start the next generation here. I found several other similar photos on the Web (most with the creepy little face on the back of the thorax) and now I'll start watching for the distinctive larvae.

Thank you, Craig!
