flat-winged micro mayfly - Caenis - male

flat-winged micro mayfly - Caenis - Male
Oakland, Caroline County, Maryland, USA
July 14, 2020
Size: 3.5 mm
This is one of several VERY small mayflies that came to sheet near MV lamp on rural residential property. All of them did something I've never seen in a mayfly of any size -- they held their wings horizonal (parallel to the ground). 3.5 mm is body length from head to tip of abdomen; cerci approximately 7 mm long.

Caenis
Hi Dave-

This male imago is of genus Caenis. Unlike most other mayflies, when their (2) wings are at rest, they are characteristically held out parallel to the ground. Why, you ask; darned if I know.
