Hydrophilus ovatus

Hydrophilus ovatus
7.25 mi SE of Washington, Beaufort County, North Carolina, USA
August 5, 2020
The recent (paywalled) key:
Short, AEZ and McIntosh IV, CE. 2014. Review of the Giant Water Scavenger Beetle Genus Hydrophilus Geoffroy (Coleoptera: Hydrophilidae) of the United States and Canada. The Coleopterists Bulletin, 68(2):187-198. https://doi.org/10.1649/0010-065X-68.2.187

is very helpful, using abdominal sternite glabrous area extent as a distinguishing character - much easier than the anterior portion of the prosternum!

This specimen was photographed in the morning at blacklight which had run overnight.
